The exterior of this Powell home was painted to highlight architectural details and natural wood textures, providing both durability and timeless appeal. McFarland explains: “We take the time to do it right so that the finish lasts and continues to enhance the space for years to come.”
Even the front door was treated as a signature element. The carefully applied finish balances polished elegance with long-lasting durability, inviting visitors in while reflecting the home’s thoughtfully curated character.
A Home Office and Hallway Designed for Impact and Function
The office and open-air hallway posed both design and logistical challenges due to height and visibility. To safely execute precise finishes, scaffolding was required.
“This required us to bring in scaffolding…we really take to heart safety on it. And that’s very important, that we have people up here that understand that we want them to be able to go home at night. But with the heights in here, you have no other choice but to use scaffold over ladders,” McFarland notes.
The result is a striking, durable space that combines functional efficiency with polished elegance, complementing the home’s transitional-rustic aesthetic.
Stucco Columns as Architectural Focal Points
Four stucco columns in the foyer were transformed with a refined glaze that adds dimension, depth, and subtle elegance. McFarland explains: “The homeowner wanted to do something different. So what we came up with was a glaze that we put over top of them. What the glaze did was it filled in some of these voids and really just added a nice depth and a nice feel to this space. It’s actually a very classy, elegant look.”
The columns now serve as sophisticated architectural accents, uniting rustic textures and traditional details in a visually harmonious composition.
Living Room Walls Transformed into Artful Surfaces
The living room features a standout wall treatment using parchment paper, arranged in a layered, artistic design. “This is parchment paper, that you hang similar to wallpaper, but they’re torn-up pieces that you overlap. So you really kind of model and make your own design. This piece of art really just makes this paper jump out, and it’s just got a fantastic backdrop to it,” McFarland explains.
Combined with a whitewash over the brown brick, the living room achieves textural richness and elegant warmth. McFarland adds: “It was a brown brick, really just kind of looked like a solid piece when you came in the room. So what we did was we brought a product in and did a whitewash over top of the brick itself, which I think just completely changed the absolute look of this design.”
This treatment transforms a functional wall into a striking, bespoke feature that anchors the space.
A Master Bedroom Designed for Serenity and Subtle Luxury
The master bedroom is a sanctuary of soft hues, sophisticated stripes, and layered finishes. McFarland describes the approach: “So as you think about wallpapering a room, one of the things you may want to think about with that is this design that we did in this space here, which is a painted finish. Basically it’s a stripe that we did, and it’s a tone on tone.”
All walls were painted and finished with a protective clear coat, giving the stripes subtle depth and understated elegance. “It gives you a nice, really beautiful, subtle look to it. But when you really look down, it’s got a powerful feel to it,” he notes. The bedroom reflects the home’s transitional-rustic ethos while offering a peaceful, luxurious retreat.
